Welcome to the Making Lider Moves podcast, the show that brings powerhouse Latinas together to discuss the challenges our comunidades are facing and the moves they took to prioritize joy in their careers. Hosted by Yovana Rosales @yovana_rosales.
In this episode, we will be talking to none other than Alyssa Reynoso Morris, author, motivational speaker🎤 environmentalist ♻ feminist 🗽AfroLatinx 🇩🇴🇵🇷🌍. Alyssa will share with us how she was able to cultivate a writing community for herself.
Before getting three book deals, she didn't know where to start and felt alone in the process. Only 1% of submitted manuscripts are published and of those books that are actually published less than 20% of them are written by people of color. She wanted to write books since she was 7 years old but traded that aspiration in for more "realistic" goals and then abandoned the idea entirely because it felt inaccessible. But, writing always brought her back to her joy and she decided to take the leap of faith and pursue writing. Fortunately, she was able to do this by creating her writing groups as well as by joining already existing communities like Las Musas and the Dominican Writers Association to get her through. If you are an aspiring writer or have even thought about it, this is an episode you don't want to miss!
